Our SYF slot is on the 19th of April. We're performing @ 2pm (the 1st school for the afternoon session).

REMINDERS:

Please remember that we're having a performance during assembly this Friday!!
- Bring your gown & shoes (don't need make-up & head band)
- Iron your gown beforehand
- Fix your hair for the performance.

Mr Reuban Lai will be coming on Thursday, 17th March.
Wednesday's training (16th Mar) will probably take place on Thurs instead.

Sectionals:

Soprano 1 - Wednesday
Soprano 2 & Alto - Thursday

Please come for your sectionals!! These sessions are not very long.
Attendance is compulsory.

Hey people hope that the sharing session helped you understand the life of SYF with Mr Lim going crazy and stuff like that and sometimes you would feel like quiting but dont quit!
try coping it, its great stress management!!

This is something Mrs Teo gave us during our previous syf performance:
The winning choir has a dedication. There is no secret to success, It is a result of preparation, hard work and determination. Today's preparation determines tomorrow's achievement. The success of choir is the result of the combined effort of every individual. The result we get on 23rd April 2009 depends on every single member.

So how can we get silver/gold if you all dont turn up for choir practise? Think about it.. I am very dissapointed about the attendance! Just because your friends went overseas, doesnt mean you can dont come choir!

EOY takes the most percentage of our results per year.. so we should work really hard because I guess we mess up some tests along the year right? so why not study hard and put in more effort for just one last test for the year? but, remember your last marathon in your studies (for secondary school level) is 'O'level! woots! next year this time I will be taking it... to the sec 1s: It seems far, but will be here sooner than you can realize. Its just like yesterday when I just entered BGSS. hm.. 'O' level determines our future school.. so for those seniors that are resting and looking at the blog!

talking about syf,
its a period of time where choir really matures, and its going to be tough, there would be times when you feel like quitting, esp. those sec3s next year, adapting to sec3 and having to go for more intense training. Let our passion lead us through this alright? when you enjoy it, you won't even feel tired and you might do better in your studies, who knows.. for those sec4s next year(like me) we must grit our teeth and graduate from choir with honour alright? strive till the end! I believe all of us can do it, if the sec2 batch this year can cope with SYF last year, I think all of us can do it, given our experience in choir(: we just have to work harder alright?

Hey Choir members :D
As you all have known that our choir will be having a singing contest for EVERY member in choir.

1. Please note that you have to contact Jie Ling or Li Shan and tell us your groupings by tomorrow, 4 September, Saturday and please tell us as soon as possible. It will be good to tell Jie Ling or Li Shan which song you are singing.

2. Submit your song to Jia Liang through email at tanjialiang2000@hotmail.com by 9 September, Thursday.

Criterias for song
1. No children songs
2. Must be at least 3 minutes
3. Must be a KTV song, which means no singer should be singing the lyrics of the song
* You may wear your home clothes to choir only *

Sec 1: 1-3 People
Sec 2 :1-2 People
Sec 3: 1 people (WOOHOO XD) clap clap

Special Events: We will love you to perform a special event for everyone if you are able to do so :D There will be no judging, you can perform anything you like (eg. dance, act, joke, play instruments). There is no limit to the amount of people participating :D

Good luck in exams and please do not worry too much about the contest as it is a post exam activity. It will be held on first Wednesday after choir resumes.

1. Sanctus- Practice more, especially the rhythm and try to sing with the along with the words.
2. Homeward Bound- Put your feelings into the song when you sing, think about how you will feel when you are singing the song.

Late coming:
Lower Sec: 1535
Upper Sec: 1545
Although its better if you can come at 3.
note: for special trainings that don’t start at 1530, you will be considered late if you arrive 10 min after consent form timing.

Punishments:
Reduce break by half the timing given!
1st time: Individual
2nd time: People of the same level from your section
3rd time: Whole section
4th time: whole choir
5th time: 1 jumping jack per minute that you are late (done by the whole choir) + Duty for two more weeks with the original shift.

Scores
Rent from choir, $0.50 per score. Write the changes down on foolscap and transfer onto your own scores.

1st time: just rent it..
2nd time: Rent+ Lucky Dip
3rd time: sing in front of choir ALONE.
4th time: run 1 round around school and all of the above
5th time: run 2 rounds around school and all of the above

musical notes (part 1)

Okay, hello guys. I'll be posting about a tutorial on basic music notes and symbols. This tutorial is for those who can't read or understand the basic notes/symbols, and what they mean. For those who already know what the scores are saying, please bear with me.

Below are some of the common notes you'll find in the scores. For example, in Like An Eagle, you'll find :

1 beat = crotchet or quarter note

2 beats = minim or half note

3 beats = dotted note

4 beats = semibreve or whole note (which is quite long, apparantly)

This extract can be found in Like An Eagle too.

The one above is the crescando(to grow louder), and the one below is the decrescando(to grow softer). When Mr Lim is conducting, you'll find him doing the crescando when he widens the space between his palms.

You'll find these letters when the lyrics to the songs begins. 'P' stands for piano, which in Latin means 'soft'. 'F' stands for forte, meaning 'loud'.

'MP' stands for mezzo-piano, meaning 'moderately soft'. 'MF' is for mezzo-forte meaning 'moderately loud'. If it's 'PP', it means pianissimo, while 'FF' stands for fortissimo. Both of them mean 'very soft' and 'very loud' respectively.

For this to happen, Yamaha synthesizes the voice actors' voices, so they sound like robots. But not all the human voices sound really like robots, and there are more than just one VOCALOID character. Check out more about VOCALOID, if you can.

Plus, they're made to reduce the number of human errors made when singing a song. The song above, if you didn't know, was Requim Lacrimosa by Mozart. If I'm not wrong, the meaning should be something like; 'day of tears'. Anyway, two guys are singing this song, if you didn't know. xD

So, we are back from HK already. I don't have the picture which everyone took together. So no pictures for this post! I'll post it up once I get it from the teachers or from someone who has it. Send it to me if you have it please!
The dim sum there is so good! And the exchange was fun and awesome!
They were so friendly and it was very heartwarming to be around them.
K, there will be choir practices during the last week of the holidays so keep those few days free! The dates will be confirmed again so check out the blog everyday if possible in case you don't receive the message which is passed around.

Here are three things to remind all of you,

Firstly, we have to report at CHANGI AIRPORT TERMINAL 1, ROW 1 at 2 pm sharp. Don't be late and i suggest to come early.

Secondly, the things that u have to put inside ur handbag are lip balm, trip booklet, pen and sweater.

Thridly, look through all ur scores and memorise them. Make sure that u are sure of ur notes and do clarify your doubts. When we perform there,be confident, don't forget to smile and always give the best you can in singing(sing loud i mean). Please be friendly to the students there and make friends with them.

Dear HK Tour people

We have 2 new songs to learn, both of which will be quite challenging. The first is Love in any Language, in which we will incorporate sign language. The second is a Cantonese song called Tian Ye Jian. We will need to memorize all these songs! Looking at the number of practices remaining, we really need to buck up! Moreover there a few practices in which the Sec 3s cannot come because they have camp.

I ask that you put in time and effort to revise and memorize the songs that you have already learnt. Pls come to choir practice well-prepared so that we can progress much faster.

Sec 4N people, do make sure you have all the solfege copied from your juniors. You may also want to record down the song as we're learning them. Sec 4E people, if you are reading this, don't worry, you will just need to sing "Chun Tian Lai Dao Tian Ye Shang". Of course if you can learn the other songs in time, you are welcome to sing them too.

I believe we all want to put up a good show in HK. We cannot afford to waste any more time. JIAYOU! GAMBATTE!

All of you must have heard about the most exciting event to take place in the entire history of the Choir, the very opportunity that all your seniors in the past could only dream of.....

Yes! The Choir is going to fly out of the little red dot called Singapore! To the Pearl of the Orient!

Dubbed the "Breakaway" HK Tour, this will be the Choir's first international appearance. Not to be missed!

We have talked about this so for so long and it's finally happening. It's the reward for the hard work the Choir put in to achieve our very first Silver at SYF '09. We deserve this!

Tentative highlights of the "Breakaway" Tour include:

1. Tour around the beautiful City that Never Sleeps!

2. Exchange with a School or Regional Youth choir - performance with HK students

3. Disneyland - full day! Perform there too!!!

4. Shopping and Makan time!

5. 4-star hotel accomodation!

6. Most meals provided!

This trip is heavily subsidized by the school. How much do you have to pay then?

We are still waiting for the exact costs to be calculated by the travel agent. The estimate given is $200 - 400 after the subsidy. Where else can you find such a super good deal?!!!

I will continue to update you as I get more info. In the meantime, be very sweet and talk to your parents nicely. If that doesn't work, plead, coax, beg, bargain, threaten or whatever that works! Dig out your piggy bank and your dusty bankbook and start counting your assets!

It's me, xichun. Satisfied with your MYE results?? HAHAHA fine, I shan't be a spoiler.

Anyway, choir practice will resume next wednesday. Ohmygosh, I seriously can't wait to start singing again, even though it's just singing a little bit here and there. :D

And sec4s, I've got good news, or maybe it's bad to some of you guys, but Mdm Sharifah says we are welcomed to attend the practice next wednesday and she's gonna prepare some kind of farewell party/tea for us!! But the farwell tea won't be held so soon, I guess. AHAHAHA. Wonderful! She was like beaming at me when she told me all these. HAHA. She loves us. :D

Firstly, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU so very much, Mr Lim for leading Vox Brilliance to achieve our SILVER. I know we have pissed you off countless times during choir practices by singing wrong notes repeatedly, forgetting fine details here and there and blahblahblah (too many already), but we are all super happy and thankful to you for tolerating with all our nonsense and to have led us this far. We really appreciate everything you've done for us (erm, except the saliva-spitting part :D)!

THANK YOU TOO, Mr Ronald, for taking the choir during sectionals, drilling us over and over again on many parts of "White Horses" and "The Sky", and playing all three songs for us. Thank you for the wonderful job!

I am also super grateful to each and every choir member who participated in this SYF. Thank you all so much for perservering till the very end, especially the sec1s and newcomers who joined the choir only this year. I'm so glad that you all journeyed through this whole thing with us, without giving up. It must have been tough on you guys to master all 3 songs well, within a few months only. I seriously salute you guys man... :)

Choir, I think that during this whole preparation for SYF process has been tiring but very fruitful. Not only did we achieve our SILVER, we have also bonded quite a lot. Like the moment Calvin announced we got SILVER, I heard everyone screaming and hugging each other so tightly, crying tears of ~~love~~ joy, including me. I grabbed Xue E, who has just standing beside me, and hugged her instantly. Yeah, that was when we all started crying like mad. Seriously, it was a very touching scene yesterday.

And I remembered Audrey and Xue E were unknowingly challenging each other in some self-proclaimed Crying Competition or whatsoever. Audrey looked super unglam lah. :D should have caught her crying in action. :D

Okay, anyway, my point is that not only am I ecstatic to know that we got SILVER, I'm also very proud of you all and pleased to see the choir sharing the joy with each other. We have indeed grown from this much to THIS MUCH.

Thank you all so much and sorry for the lengthy post. To all sec4s, let's now chiong for our O/N levels and enjoy our trip to Korea with the rest of the choir at year end!! And to the rest, all the best for the upcoming midyears!! Choir is where clever people are born :D

Hi guys!! Firstly, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!! :D

Haha okay next. As most or maybe all of you are aware that on monday, the sec1s are going to be auditioned for choir and I hope that most of you (or better still, ALL) can turn up to help out because I doubt 4 people's help will be enough. Look on the bright side- If you go, you can see ALL the cute and bubbly sec1s! I bet the sec2s will be able stand tall, cause' they are finally the seniors of the juniors!! :D

Audition starts from 2-5pm at the AVA room unless there are changes to the venue. But for now, it stays this way.

And FYI, the altos have bought some sweets for the sec1s, to distribute to them during the audition. Afterall, we do hope they leave a good impression on choir right? And also, I've heard that there are 9 sec1 classes in total (I'm not sure if it's true though). So in other words, there will be (max.) 360 students turning up for the audition, SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, EXTEND YOUR HELPING HAND TO US... Your hand will be appreciated by many. :D

P.S. Haha sounds like I'm the host of a charity show, persuading people to call the charity hotline. Heehee.

Hello, Choir. I've been thinking about our Choir tee. These are what we have to do by the next practice:

1) We have to decide on the logo.
2) The material and colour of the shirt.
3) Collar or non-collar shirts.
4) Tee shirts with a zip or buttons.

Regarding the logo, it must be one that is suitable for both genders. I've read majority of the tags and many have chosen Design 4. It's simple yet nice but a bit girl-ish. BUT, if you guys still insist on having that logo, don't worry, we can modify it to suit both the guys and girls. I'd probably need the guys' help on this one.

As for the material of our Choir tee, it's going to be either cotton or dry fit. The colour of the shirt should also be bright (like maybe orange). Collar shirts will make us look more presentable. Non-collar shirts will probably be more comfortable I guess.

I can't use my computer from tomorrow onwards cause' of the exams, so I won't be able to blog anymore until the exams are officially over. Sorry...

My sincere apology for not attending the last Choir session as I had the Teacher's Day Concert Rehearsal.
And also I have not really done my part in doing up the blog and its not like I couldnt be bothered but I was really busy with the teacher's day concert and stuff.

Hey choir!

There are a few things I want to mention. Firstly, we'll be creating a logo for choir, a brand new choir tee and hopefully a modified gown or even better, A NEW GOWN! But we'll have to check with the school to see if the budget is sufficient. As for the guys, we'll see if there's a need to change your suits. I'll tell you all more about this next time.

Secondly, do memorise your own part for "The Wraggle Taggle Gipsies, O!" before the next choir practice, which is tomorrow. This way we can get to learn the song faster and move on to better songs! Yay.

I think that's all for now. No, 1 more thing. Are you guys keen to have a slow jog before every choir practice? It's to train our stamina, make us fitter, blah blah blah. It's just a suggestion cause' I'm very keen. Want? :)
